Signac. - Tafeln tlw. leicht stockfl. und schwach wasserrandig (dadurch vereinz. mit leichtem Abklatsch), 1 Taf. mit kl. Fehlstelle (Darstellungsverlust), 1 Taf. mit kl. Randläsuren, 1 Taf. mit Knickspur, Text stockfl. und etw. gebräunt. Kanten beschabt, Gelenke des Tafelbandes etw. brüchig.

First edition of Chevreul's influential main work on color harmony. With 3 (2 in colors) engr. and 37 lithographed plates (34 with stenciled coloring) on together 22 sheets (of which 15 folding and 1 with movable part, 14 sheets signed by Chevreul below the image) as well as 9 handwriting samples on color papers and 2 folding charts. Modern half calf with label using the old boards and endpapers and contemp. half calf with gilt spine. This work had more influence on painting, particularly on the Impressionists G. Seurat and P. Signac, than it actually had on optics. - Plates slightly foxed and with slight traces of damp (leading to slight offsetting), 1 plate with small defective spot (loss of image), 1 plate with small marginal blemish, 1 plate with crease mark, text foxed and somewhat browned. Edgeworn, joints of plate vol. somewhat brittle.
