Johann Bayer
Uranometria. Daraus: 39 Sternkarten (von 51). Kupferstiche von Alexander Mair. Augsburg oder Ulm 1639-1723. Je ca. 28 : 38 cm (Blattgr. 31 : 40 cm).

(ADB II, 188) - "The very attractive constellation figures in the Uranometria were not original with Bayer but were derived from those drawn by Jacobo de Gheyn a few years earlier. The similarity was not coincidental. Bayer frequently quoted the Syntagma Arateorum (Leiden 1600), Hugo Grotius' edition of Aratus illustrated with de Gheyn's constellation figures." (Warner S. 18)

EINBAND: Lose Tafeln. Insgesamt gut erhaltene Folge.

LITERATUR: Warner S. 18f. - Brown S. 19ff. - Vgl. Zinner 3951; Honeyman Coll. 246; Kenney 13; Thorndike VII, 47; Darmstaedter S. 106; DSB I, 530 (alle EA 1603).

Collection of 39 star charts (of 51) from J. Bayer's "Uranometria", the first accurate star atlas which was first published in 1603 and was reissued until the early 18th century. 39 engravings after de Gheyn by Alexander Mair, depicting the star constellations of the Northern hemisphere. From one of the later editions with the charts without text on verso. Loose sheets. - With ms. titles of the constellations by an old hand in the upper white margins. Impressions somewhat flat in places (which also suggests a later edition of the charts), centrefold with occasional small tear to bottom, only few plates slightly foxed, plate "Centaurus" with longer marginal tear of ca. 7 cm. Overall well-preserved set of the attractive star charts.
